Megyn Kelly Reminds Us, Republican and Sexist are not Synonyms

It is not often that pen gets put to paper here and it is not about something negative that has bubbled its way forth to my attention. Last week there was an excellent segment on the news that I would like to call attention to...

Megyn Kelly featured pundit Erick Erickson, of the (admittedly Republican, but that's not the point) blog RedState. Erick was defending a stance against working mothers; arguing that it is natural for the female of a species to be "submissive" and that the male of the species was the protector and provider.

Ms. Kelly's remarks are a reminder that successful women are not necessarily the wilting flowers that Dem Terry McAuliffe would like you to believe they are, and illustrates that McAuliffe is trying to play Virginia's women to win the governorship.

The story  was referring to these new statistics. They have found that 40% of females are now the breadwinners in their homes. Erickson was in the middle of a poorly-reasoned argument that gender roles are not interchangeable (well, that's what he was trying to say anyway) and tumbled down the road to damn-near-misogyny. Kelly took Erickson's pseudo-science to the net,

"In this country in the ’50s and ’60s there were huge numbers of people that … said it was science and fact if you were the child of a black father and white mother or vice versa you were inferior and not set up for success. Tell that to Barack Obama." 

"Why is this important?" you may ask. Well, it really is heartening to see a strong Republican woman who is standing up to idiotic and archaic absolutes of gender roles without someone dropping misplaced blame at the feet of conservatism. 

The backdrop of this campaign in the Commonwealth, and Terry McAuliffe's underhanded half-truthing antics make for a lot of misdirection and smoke-and-mirrors for Virginia's women. This is the Terry McAuliffe who left his newborn and recovering wife in the car and ditched her on the way to the hospital BOTH so he could collect a check . Oh, he also got kicked out of the delivery room in 1993 for yelling at the doctor about healthcare reform.

Terry McAuliffe's respect for women only reaches the exact distance to the bank; naturally, he wants to demonize his opponent. 

Terry would have you believe that Ken Cuccinelli and all Republicans behind him are cackling boogeymen, come to take away the Nineteenth Amendment and cast us all into the Dark Ages! That is false.

This is the perfect illustration to respond to the tripe that the McAuliffe campaign is spewing about the Attorney General waging a war on women. Republican and sexist are not synonyms and that is not always acknowledged in less-than-sportsman-like Dem campaigns. Megyn Kelly has reminded us of that.

Ken Cuccinelli is no more fighting a war on women than Megyn Kelly is. Terry and the Democratic party are trying to play those women for chumps by saying so. That tired old rhetoric out of the 19-whatever Democratic campaign book is getting old and no one believes it anymore.

Giuliani Warns Virginia Jobs are in Defense Cut Crosshairs

Former Mayor of New York Rudy Giuliani made a stop in Virginia Beach recently to warn veterans, citizens, and workers alike that the looming Obama Defense cuts are threatening to hit the Commonwealth the hardest. The article details Giuliani's warning that Virginia's job climate could be in for some difficult times ahead if nothing is done about these cuts.

We are home to the Pentagon, Quantico, Oceana Naval Station, and Langley Air Force Base; some of the most important and famous military installations in the world. This is not some far-off problem. Thousands of Virginian livelihoods are hovering in the crosshairs of these proposed cuts.

President Obama wants to cut the military, and that means Virginia jobs and Virginia families. Several Virginia Republicans have come out against Obama's proposed cuts, including Gov. McDonnell. Its time to let the White House know that cuts to our military don't only hurt our security abroad, but are dangerous to the welfare of Virginians at home.

Tracy Thorne Begland, Explained

Free thinking minds all over the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia were appalled at the recent rejection for judgeship of one Tracy Thorne-Begland. Begland would have been Virginia's first openly gay judge, and was also a veteran of the US Navy. He has been an outstanding prosecutor in his home district of Richmond Virginia. The move was seen far and wide as an act of bigotry and hate. Delegate Bob Marshall then chose to throw gasoline on the fire, coming out with a homophobic and backwards thinking interview in which he ACTUALLY SAID "Sodomy is not a civil right."

This blogger believes that he has hammered the last blue nail into Obama's victory in Virginia this November, but that is a post for another day. While my beliefs tend towards libertarian, and I am pro gay marriage and gay rights, when I take a look at the reasonings offered by select members of Virginia's legislature, this issue can certainly be seen in a different light. The misunderstanding that many people have is that a judge is a-political. A judge should have no strong convictions whatsoever that could affect their judgements. Judges are important to the legislative process, but they are NEVER meant to make the law. They are meant to interpret the law that exists and no more.

I believe that many of the reservations shown by the House of Delegates were not motivated by hate of gay people, but by a fear that Mr. Thorne-Begland would use his position on the bench to advance a particular cause over another. I believe that the legislature would strike down a devout Catholic activist as well, if the slide went all the way to the other end of the political spectrum. With Roe v. Wade in place, I would expect the legislature to strike down an ardent pro-lifer as well.

I believe that Mr. Thorne-Begland, with all of the support he has been shown, could have a very exciting run for the legislature, and there he could effect the changes he wishes to see. He just cannot do it from a jurist's bench, says Virginia. Thats just what one conservative thinks.
